Identifiers for HIPAA concepts that no external vocabulary supplies, minted by RFC 0016 for operator_role and data_classes. Each definition is a paraphrase; the cited section of the Code of Federal Regulations is authoritative. Publishing a term does not interpret the regulation, and declaring one makes nothing compliant.
For operator_role
hipaa:CoveredEntity — Covered entity
A health plan, a health care clearinghouse, or a health care provider that transmits health information electronically in connection with a transaction covered by HIPAA.
Defined in 45 CFR 160.103
hipaa:BusinessAssociate — Business associate
A person or organisation that, on behalf of a covered entity and other than as a member of its workforce, creates, receives, maintains or transmits protected health information, or provides services to a covered entity that involve disclosing it.
Defined in 45 CFR 160.103
For data_classes
hipaa:PHI — Protected health information
Individually identifiable health information transmitted or maintained in any form or medium, excluding certain education and employment records.
Defined in 45 CFR 160.103
hipaa:ePHI — Electronic protected health information
Protected health information that is transmitted by, or maintained in, electronic media.
Defined in 45 CFR 160.103
hipaa:LimitedDataSet — Limited data set
Protected health information that excludes the direct identifiers listed in the regulation for the individual and for their relatives, employers and household members.
Defined in 45 CFR 164.514(e)
hipaa:DeIdentified — De-identified health information
Health information that does not identify an individual and offers no reasonable basis to identify one, as established by expert determination or by removing the identifiers the regulation lists. De-identified information is not protected health information.
Defined in 45 CFR 164.514(a)–(b)
Minted under RFC 0016's rule: a term is published here only where no external vocabulary supplies it, and its meaning is fixed. See thewell-known prefixes andRFC 0016.
